boom. was borne from a series of discussions between emerging WA creatives. Working across a variety of fields, these visual artists, fashion designers, architectural designers, musicians, photographers and writers considered how Perth’s famed mining boom and its resulting economic prosperity impacted their lives, their practices, and their approach to being a young artist in WA. In a state whose priorities seem focussed on industry rather than the arts, some passionately abhorred what they saw as a lack of support for the teeming youthful creativity that surrounded them. Others simply felt that the boom, and its subsequent bust, passed them by.

From this shared starting point comes boom., a publication and exhibition of collaborative and solo artworks and fictional text that seek to map out the disparate responses of all involved. Sculptures that playfully riff on Perth’s seemingly unending sea of cranes and construction communicate with video works that examine aestheticised nationalism and bogan pride, while striking architectural imaginings, photographs of ever-developing suburbia and large scale exploratory drawings sit next to a series of documented performative suburban interventions. Also on show, the results of a cross-continental dialogue between two fashion designer friends, charming disfigured caricatures inspired by prosthetics and Australia Day celebrations, a collaborative project between a poet and a photographer, and documented performances from local band Cease.
